American Artist James Conner

American Artist Bio - James Conner

James Day Conner, known as "The Portrait Painter of American Cities" grew up in a small community not far from "The Queen City," Cincinnati. His paintings reflect two worlds: the rural community of Bethel, Ohio with its rolling landscapes and quaint village scenes, and the resplendent architecture of Cincinnati with its towering buildings on the banks of the Ohio River.

Influenced by portrait artist William Gephardt of Cincinnati and skyline painter William Dietrich, of the University of  Cincinnati, James found that he could capture the look and feeling of a city by creating a montage of landmarks. He creates an intricate sense of detail with pen and ink and then adds color with brilliant watercolor washes.

His work can be seen in the corporate offices of many major American cities as well as in the homes of residents who view his work as a wonderful way to celebrate their connections to the places they love.

James Day Conner celebrates his own roots with his paintings of the American landscape. He loves to capture a feeling of "home" with neat landscape scenes made interesting and believable by his generous use of trees and the sense of coziness he expresses so well.

James is currently working on a series of oil paintings commemorating the vanishing wood churches of rural America. Each work will include the artist notes about that church. The series of paintings will be known as Landmarks of American Faith. You may view these works under Inspirational Art.

His natural sense of balance and color make each painting work. Whether purchasing one of his unique city prints or one of his original oil paintings, your purchase will be valued for decades to come.

You may visit the home gallery of James Day Conner in the heart of Grand Blanc, Michigan at 113 Grand Blanc Road. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Commission the Artist

The montage art of American Artist James Conner is a wonderful way to mark a milestone or celebrate a success story of growth and development. His ability to communicate both detail and balance while knitting images together to tell a broader story is a wonderful gift.

James first creates a freehand line drawing, knitting the elements together in an interesting way. The line drawing is scanned and made available for one color applications of various sizes. We have found that his artwork holds detail at many sizes. Next, the artist boldly adds watercolor washes to the work that enrich the image and create shadows that allow for a three dimensional effect.

The montage paintings of James Conner are timeless. The approach allows for elements to be included that are no longer in existence or proposed elements of the future.

Commissions require direct contact with the artist and an exchange of ideas. For more information contact the James Conner Gallery directly at 1-800-257-4390 or visit the Gallery at 113 Grand Blanc Road, in the heart of Grand Blanc, Michigan.
